We Follow The Three Rs:
Repair. Reconditioning. Restoration.
Palmetto Strings specializes in assisting musicians, whether starting or advanced, as well as the parents of student musicians, and the many devoted teachers in our area attempting to navigate the many facets of this confusing, highly competitive, and often deceptive business. All work is done by our luthiers and apprentices on the premises.
We engage in instrument sales, rentals, as well as accessories, advice, appraisals, and instruction. We have an ongoing apprentice program for high school students. This program is also often attended by working professionals and teachers to increase and expand their technical knowledge, as well.
One of only three full service orchestral instrument shops in the state of South Carolina. We opened in Columbia in 2011. The staff, however, has been servicing the Midlands string community for over 20 years.
We are a free standing shop in downtown Columbia, easily accessible from all areas of the Midlands and other communities. Free, on site parking is available.
Staff
Gregg and his staff are dedicated to having their customers get the best value for their money. Our goal is for any visitor or customer to leave the shop more educated, whether it be on a transaction, purchase or repair in which they are involved. The staff at Palmetto Strings have a very close relationship with many of the manufacturers, importers, and wholesalers to the violin business. We have assisted in the development of many new products and ideas. We are consultants to numerous companies that manufacture, sell and distribute products for the orchestra community.
We do our best to stay apprised of new products being introduced to this always changing industry. For this assistance to the industry, we often receive extra discounts on merchandise, we sell in the shop. We pass these savings on to our customers, whenever possible.
Apprentice Program
Palmetto Strings currently has an apprentice program for high school students who have an interest, and show an aptitude for such work. Some of the past apprentices have gone on to complete degrees in music education and some are now working in the education field. Others have gone on to open and run, or join the staff of other violin shops.
We also open our shop to string teachers who wish to work along side these apprentices to increase their knowledge on the technical aspects of repair, and proper set-up of string instruments. This also assists these teachers in helping them to identify the many inferior products, often sold to unknowing parents and students.
